The passionate heat of 'flamenco' is evoked within the rippling pleats of the dress, flowing from the figure . The fan with the golden cat motif offers a juxtoposition suggesting the feline nature of the figure and the spirit (duende) expressed in the painterly fabric of the 'flamenco'.....a symbolic gesture reflecting a somewhat primordial sensual being.
This painting was influenced conceptually by Lorca (from his book entitled 'Duende) and the portraits of Holbein.
