The ritual of Turkish Wrestling was the inspiartion for this painting. The wrestlers would be covered from top to toe in olive oil and wrestle often in the blazing summer heat at the Kirkpinar (40 springs) arena just outside the city of Edirne, in Turkey. The wrestlers perform certain rituals that allude to the shamanic roots of the Turkic people which has a geographic span from Europe, Central Asia and Mongolia. The contests between the wrestlers offers amazing physical theartre to observe with the winner being the last man standing.
