'THE APPLE" - GUEST STAR
CELESTE YARNALL - STAR TREK
OIL ON CANVAS
40" X 30" INCHES

THIS PAINTING WAS INSPIRED BY THE CLASSIC EPISODE CALLED 'THE APPLE' FROM THE ORIGINAL SERIES OF 'STAR TREK' CREATED BY GENE RODDENBERRY. THE EPISODE FEATURES SPECIAL GUEST STAR CELESTE YARNALL, IN THE ROLE OF YEOMAN MARTHA LANDON.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS EPISODE WAS VERY MUCH AN EXPLORATION OF THE 'PRIME DIRECTIVE' ON VARIOUS LEVELS, BUT ALSO SIGNIFICANT IN THAT THE FEMALE CHARACTER PORTRAYED BY CELESTE YARNALL, HAD PARITY WITH THE REST OF MALE LEADS. THE FEMINIST SYMBOLISM EMBODIED IN THE CHARACTER, SAW HER AS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE CREW, ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF HERSELF, AS WELL AS SIGNIFING THE ROLE OF EVE, OR HEALER INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT OF 'LOVE', TO THE NATIVES OF THE PLANET, AN IDEA THAT EVOKED THE 'GARDEN OF EDEN'.

IN THE PORTRAIT OF CELESTE, ONE CAN DENOTE THE POWERFUL STANCE OF A WARRIOR FIGURE, PERHAPS AN ECO WARRIOR, WHICH HAS BEEN A DEFINING ROLE THE ACTRESS HAS IMPORTED INTO HER REAL LIFE AS AN ACCLAIMED ACTIVIST WITHIN THE HOLISTIC HEALTH MOVEMENT.
